Mix one part white vinegar with eight parts hot water and pour a heavy amount of this solution over the affected area within the carpeting.

Sponge the area of the carpet that still smells like wine. Some wine may have also absorbed into the carpet pad under the carpet. This household acid is cheap and effective at cutting though wine related odors within carpeting. Next blot the area dry with a clean dry cloth or paper towel. Moisten the carpet fibers down to the bottom of the carpet to loosen any remaining wine stains. Be careful not to overdo it or you will strip color from the carpet. You should be able to remove the rest of the stain if you go over the entire area with a steam cleaner.
